Colonies In The New World

Many settlers came to the new world looking for new land to settle, and new ways to establish new government. There are ten in particular I want to talk about Virginia, Massachusetts Bay, Plymouth, Maryland, Conneticut, Rhode Island, Delaware, New York, Pennsylvania, and Georgia.

Virginia was founded by the virginia company in the year of 1607. Which was lead by John Smith. There motives for settling here was for the economy. They wanted to gain wealth, and convert the natives to christianity.By 1775 virginia was a colony. Massachusetts Bay was founded by the Puritans in 1630. John Winthrop lead the group to settle here for religious reasons. Now Plymouth was founded by the separatists, or Pilgrims. The leader was William Bedford. He also had religious reasons for settling here.Eventually Plymouth was absorbed by Massuchusetts in 1775. Now Maryland was founded by Lord Baltimore for religious reasons, and he was also motivated by money.In 1775 MAryland was a colony.

Conneticut was founded by Thomas Hooker in 1636. Hooker and many other followers were looking for freedom, and looking for new ways to make money. They had moved from Massachusetts and founded Conneticut. Rhode Island was founded by Roger Williams in 1636 and was founded for religious reasons. He didnt belive in freedom of religion, and the seperation of church and state, which made him an outkast. Delaware was founded by Peter Minuit in 1638.He wanted this land because his brother the Duke of York had been given new netherland. Delaware was apart of Pennsylvania until 1703.

New York was founded by the Duke of York in 1664. This is when the Duke gained control of the land. James changed the name in honor of the Duke. Now Pennsylvania was founded by William Penn in 1682. This land was given to him as compensation for his deceased father. He also had religious reasons for this colony. He wanted to have freedom of religion so none of the quakers had to be killed because of there religion. Last but not least Georgia was founded by James Oglethorpe in 1732. This colony was founded because it was used from keeping the Spanish from spreading from Florida, and also it was used as a place where debtors could go and start a whole new life.

Many of the colonies had diffrent motivations or reasons for starting anew. They all had diffrent religious belifs or financial motivations that made the colnies what they became.
